The Robinson nuclear unit began commercial operation on March 7, 1971 and is named for H. Burton Robinson, a former executive vice president of Carolina Power & Light. The plant is located adjacent to the 2,250-acre Lake Robinson. The Robinson nuclear plant was the first commercial nuclear power plant in the southeastern United States and was then the largest such in the world.
In its first 35 years of operation -- through March 7, 2006 -- the Robinson nuclear plant has generated more than 155 million megawatt-hours of electricity. The plant is consistently ranked among the top nuclear plants in the country in terms of safety, production, cost and human performance.
The H.B. Robinson Plant received its operating license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 1970. The plant's original license term of 40 years was set to expire July 31, 2010. In 2004, Progress Energy received a 20-year license renewal from the NRC, extending the operating license of the plant through July 2030.
H.B. Robinson's nuclear unit generates 710 megawatts of electricity. Unit 1 at the Robinson Plant, a coal-fired plant, began commercial operation in May 1960 and generates 174 megawatts of electricity. Collectively, the two units generate enough power to serve more than 650,000 homes.
